Obtaining two 10 DR weapons (which are easier to obtain than most 11 DR weapons), a 10 DR held such as a 10/10 [[Shard Of Black Doom Marble]], and the best DR item of each slot (except [[Girth Of The Most Holy]]) will increase your DR by 86 above your race's natural DR.

(1) If you use two weapons, it's recommended to use [[Leviathan Scale]] to bash, because of its DR bonus.

(2) Although only 4 DR the [[Shard Of Black Doom Marble]] and the [[Orb Of Amorphous Essence]] are both weapons and can be enchanted up to 12 DR, with 10 DR being the average used(see each page for details). 

Obtaining two 10 DR weapons (which are easier to obtain than most 11 DR weapons), a 10 DR held such as a 10/10 [[Shard Of Black Doom Marble]], and the best DR item of each slot (except [[Girth Of The Most Holy]]) will increase your DR by 86 above your race's natural DR.

To further improve DR you must upgrade your Weapons and Held (see (2) above) by using [[Enchant Weapon]] (never Enchant anything you can't replace yourself). Doing this can take considerable farming and enchanting time, but you can add a 12 DR Held and two 14 DR weapons (or, as is common 14 DR wield and 15 DR offhand), which will of course add another 10 or 11 DR respectively.

I do a lot of style sheet and web programming for my work and I've thought of making a general style sheet for the wiki. My idea is (something like this anyway) that we inventory what we need, what kind of titles and headlines and various types of elements, tables and so on, for all the pages on the AV wiki. Then we make a stylesheet that incorporates all the commonalties on a base level (like font type, base size, site wide stuff) and also has a set of classes for people to reference as needed in specific situations. A long while ago, someone went a bit nutty with categories and now it would take so much work to untangle it that it probably isn't worth the effort. Your best bet to make it easier to search is to create redirect pages that point to the appropriate category. Look at the area pages to see the syntax. (I did all those before, including Transforest as you noticed, and I have no burning desire ever to do it again. *shudder carpaltunnel*)

speaking of categories... it would be nice if there was a page to see all mobs that stomp. the current page [[Stomping Mobs|Stomps]] doesn't list the actual mobs just describes the trait. as do similar [[Mob Types]] pages like [[Sniping Mobs]] or something. and i tried but it won't let me flag a mob that is a stomper with that category (like the [[Death Knight General]]). i'm trying to get it to show up there like [[Mobs In Necromancer's Tower]] does at the bottom of his page. then eventually we could use that tag for other stomper mob pages and build up a list. would be nice if all the [[Mob Types]] showed which mobs were flaged for each actually, but i guess that would be a pain to do ;) --[[User:3nki|3nki]] 23:44, 3 August 2011 (CDT)

On each page on the left you will see a "What links here" link. Click on that to see all the pages that references that page. So you will get all the mobs that link to the [[Stomping Mobs|Stomping]] page. However, that is a toolbox way of handling the issue. Early on, we decided to use a lot of categories for any page that seems like it would logically "contain" other pages. The main motivation behind this is that categories give you lists for free. Instead of manually keeping a page like [[:Category:Gear In Wamphyri Aerie|Gear In Wamphyri Aerie]] up-to-date the wiki does it for us. I also tried to get the wiki to search for categories by default, but this doesn't seem to be working anymore (if it ever did). I'll see what I can do to fix this. One possibility is to use a Google search plugin instead of MediaWiki's built-in search.

Re: list of stomping mobs. This is the exactly the type of situation that categories were made for. It's pretty easy to set up, just add <nowiki>[[Category:Stomping Mobs]]</nowiki> or so to every such mob.

== Uploading XML or TXT files ==
We're running into a problem with CMud scripts exported as XML files. Apparently, the Wiki is reading certain characters as their ASCII code, rather than the character required by CMud to import the XML file for later use.

Is there anyway we could enable uploading of XML or TXT files so we can then link them to the correct script pages?

== Organizing quest pages ==

I've increasingly noticed a lot of players asking about quests for their level, and I realized that none of the quests on the wiki are organized by level range. Solution: create and populate categories for quests in the same level ranges as areas and gear, which is easy, if a bit demanding on my carpals. But in addition to that, do we want to restructure the quest pages altogether to separate the quest descriptions from their solutions? I was thinking of just separating them into different sections on the page, but maybe they could be separated by putting the descriptions on the "Category:Quests in Wherever" page, and the solutions in the individual quest pages. (I think it would be too much page bloat to create entirely new pages for quest solutions.) Thoughts?

Well, that ''could'' be a pain to maintain, since the "Lowmort X-X Quests" categories would be LONG once they're all filled up with content. But it would be doable, as long as we figure out a decent way to sort them all (perhaps group them by reward type, i.e. Insignia/Gear/Weapon/Gold&Gems/XP etc.)

Also, if the "Quests in Wherever" categories are going to remain empty, I would suggest nixing them entirely and sticking quest pages directly in their area categories. Currently, all they do is stick another mouse click between you and the page you really want to see, and the vast majority of them only contain one quest.

Drow receive a 10% reduction to spell casting costs generally and an additional 2% reduction on arcane spells, making them very nice casters with bountiful mana pools, if not particularly buff. Drow will gain 95% HP of a human with the same constitution, which is not much. They will be nofail at 95%.

Drow make good archers, though not as good as their cousins the elves, but they excel at stealth-related tasks having one of the highest stealth modifiers in game. Unfortunately they have no damage modifier so they will not hit as hard as some of the bigger races.

Overall, drow are a fast race to play, making solid casters of any sort, or roguish characters if one is looking for alternatives to kzinti and such. Their largest issue is the no-sun racial, which will take some getting used to for new players, but is certainly nothing that can't be overcome through judicious usage of proper spells.

Elves may participate in the [[Diplomatic Corps]] every 10 levels at lowmort. All Elves should report to [[Aeldiskaa|Aeldiskaa]] when they are ready to begin.

== Comments ==

Many people would say, to start with you can go Orc for melee or Elf for caster and that's all you ever need to know.

Elves receive a 10% reduction to spell casting costs generally and an additional 2% reduction on arcane spells. In addition to this, elves are no-fail once they reach 95% and also have substantial mana pools regardless of their chosen class. This makes them terrific casters with low enough TNL to be able to level in a fast and effective manner.

Their cousins the drow have even lower TNL but their no-sun racial penalty can threaten their mana pools - making indeed the elves preferable for a new player that wishes to play a good caster.

Elves will gain 95% HP of a human with the same constitution; this combined with a lack of natural armors and racial damage modifier makes them poor tanks and poor brutes.

Elves have a high archery modifier, higher than their drow relatives, but somewhat less than centaurs, making them viable archers. Archery combined with their large mana pools means they can be solid druids.

Concerning stealth, they are not bad, but a lack of a damage modifier will make them suboptimal stabbers.

The recipe was obtained from a series of pages of manuscript scattered about Veil of Ecstasy after "a wave of bugs hit the MUD" over a couple of weeks, resulting in corrupted Immortal pfiles running havoc around there.

==Directions==

The Gray staff and [[Katar Forged From Kzintium]] share the same first half, with slightly different directions to get to where you first need to be. If you agree to do the Katar questline, the Gray Staff will be un-doable until next reboot.

===Part One===

Do the [[Sceptre of Blazing Fury]] run. You need the [[Flame of Imix]] to burn the documents. Best to do this first so that you can lotto the sceptre/balteus/qp runes, and not force your group to commit to a three spellup run.

===Part Two===

1. From shift, head all west into the Shunned World. Head up, then work your way northwest and up and until you reach the room "At the edge of the village square." Head n2w from here to reach the Elder. Agree with him to start the Gray Staff quest.

2. Make your way back out into the jungle, then head towards the mines as on the katar run. The easiest way to do this is to leave shunned world, then go all north, then go east until scan shows a kzinti warrior north of you. Keep heading north until scan shows a Kzin scientist north of you. From here, head all east, all north, and east to enter the mines.

The following steps are copied/pasted from Katar.

3. Mines are generally "U" shaped with you entering the mines the upper right side. Head south and west til you see Raskartan and a couple of other mobs in the way. Not a hard room but best to send in a tank and have a backup tank in the wings for this room. (btw if you avoid all the miners actively mining, not the ones just wandering looking for a place to mine you won't set off any of the alarms.)

4. Entrance to the spire is just a bit north west of the large room you had to get by.

5. You can regen in room with the peaceful kzinti. He will give you 5 choices of directions.

*Take what you bring - No regen path, bonus is regen room right before final room because a safe room
*Might makes right - No spell path, bonus is majority of gear room doesn't have sanc. Can cast in gear room and regen room just fine.
*All is lost - Shortest path but it is a maze, no modifications to gear room or regen room
*Power is everything - melee immune path, extra big ass gassy mob added to gear room but he has pgems. Gear room is silent. Requires a very good group to even consider.
*Win some, lose some - det path, small det mobs added to path that do not repop. Det mob is removed from gear room.

If you have a strong enough group, you should definitely do the "Power is Everything" (Up) Path, as the path itself is not too much harder than the noregen (North) path. After you choose a path, the peaceful kzin will take a little time to lower the barrier. Once he says the barrier is weakened, you can push barrier to proceed.

*Only the kzinti ghosts on this path are melee immune, the horde of rats and other swarms are able to be damaged by melee.
*To navigate the path itself, choose a direction to go and never backtrack, then take the up and down exits as they become available to you.
*Right before the gear room is a room containing lots of imps that can be immolated by your sors. There is also one aggie mob here, so do NOT areaspell in this room.
*The room contains one mob that dets, the cloud. Have your sors/mnds target that first until it dies so that you can wear gear again. It is best to send a (naked) bzk first along with the burning hands pill from Eragora so that you can abuse Resist Pain and huge hp until the cloud dies. Have your ac tanks wear their gear after the cloud is dead (checkable by looking at the cloud until you can no longer see it).
*The gear room's gas is quite painful; you will probably need augment 2 preach comf to survive until the gassy mob dies.

If you choose to take this path, the room will still be silenced after it is clear. Instruct your group members to plane thorn after the room is clear, then salv your bzk (or strand them there for hilarity). Make sure to "take all corpse" from all the corpses before you leave to ensure that everything is looted.

6. Keep the documents from the gear room, and save them until you are ready to run next part.
Loot should be: Circlet, Documents, Gloves, Sceptre (included in any path)

===Part Three===

1. Make your way back to the Elder in Shunned world. Give him the documents, then the Flame of Imix when he asks for the flame from the Volcano.

2. Follow the Elder when he prompts you to be taken deeper into Shunned world. He will give you a warning not to kill any of the villagers; if you do, you are dragged out and warned about how you screwed up, but he will give you a second chance in exchange for a pyrolisk heart. No real harm seems to be done though. Still, best not to kill any villagers to not get your group fragmented. Have your rogues turn off their stab triggers to be safe.

3. The goal of this section is to get a key. It is carried by a completely invisible (no glowing red eyes) stabber, [[a killer]]. Killing any killer will drop a key. Note that the killer is NOT carrying the key in his inventory. When you see the message "The light catches on a silvery speck," that killer has spawned the key and it is on the ground. Pick it up!

4. Make your way north-ish until you find a locked north. North is the gear room. The safest place to regen is 1e from this room. Don't unlock the door yet!

5. Once regen'd, go 1w to reach the door again. If there are any mobs in the room, wait for them to move/die before you attempt to unlock the door. This run suffers the same problem as Katar where the key has 1-2 uses and it can break before opening the door if you're unlucky.

6. The gear room is north. It has 7 mobs; a sorcerer, a shadows, and 5 bodyguards. Spells to watch out for here are demonfire, dread (can really screw you up if your lead tank gets dreaded), and migraine. The gear room isn't that bad (no "room goes no-spell in 4-5 rounds) overall.
The loot you are looking for are the left and right halves of a token.

7. Make your way southeast and back into the village. Give the Elder both halves of the token and he will give you the gray staff. Also on the run are some items ([[Essence Of Magic]] and [[Essence Of Shadows]]), which are on body mana and t2 leg ac, respectively.

8. For some reason the village is entirely anti-magic. To get out, head 2esd to reach a room where you can planeshift.
